They soon became very popular with their
close harmony vocals, and their efforts culminated in a
recording contract with Beacon / EMI records.
Recordings from that period included : " Happiness is love", "Help me I'm on top of the world", "The
girl I'll never know", "Hello heartaches", and
"Take up the hammer".
Phil Wright joined the re-formed
band in 1997 after a very successful period with another
Nottingham band "Paper Lace", who
he joined in 1967 as drummer and lead singer.

They were then called "Music Box", but
soon after changed their name. In 1974 "Billy don't be a hero"
reached number one in the UK , and later the same year "The
night Chicago died" reached number one in America.
Walt Savage on
keyboards/vocals joined the band in 2000 ; yet another member
with a long musical history in Nottingham. In 1968 he helped
form "Whichwhat" who like
"Sons and Lovers" had a recording contract on Beacon.
Recordings from that period included : "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin", "In the year 2525", and " Why do lovers break each others heart". Like Whichwhat, Sons and Lovers
achieved greater chart success abroad than in the UK, but fans
from that period, and new converts, are always ready for the
next live gig.
The latest member and
bass player is Richard Hill from Nottingham. He
has has had a long successful career playing with
the Brian Poole band and the 'Sounds of the Blues
Brothers'. They were the first ever tribute to them and for
22 years performed all over the world playing
many TV programs like Noels house party, Ant & Dec,
Generation Game, and many
more .
So there you have it, "Sons and
Lovers", five guys with a memorable past, a wealth of
talent, who still love performing .
Hope to
see you soon . Spike,
Dick, Mick, Walt, &
